301 - Forum Diplomacy Only Steel SVC
(02-20-2016, 12:14 AM)SylvieRafa Wrote: OCC: Still no responses? Oh well. Someone else said before it feels like an old boys network around here and that sounds about right. Will keep fighting until my month subscription runs out but without help or WA bothering even speaking to me I won't last more than a few turns anyways. It was fun for awhile but some people are just too intense and others don't seem to want to talk...

OOC:

My apologies for not responding.  It truly had nothing to do with you or anything relating to Alamaze at all.  I'm not going to go into details, but basically my life has turned into a shitstorm of suck and it's consuming all my attention.  That probably means my decision to nuke you was a mistake - the entire purpose of this particular variant is public diplomacy, and I went silent right after making a nuclear move.  It had just been a plan long in the making and I guess I didn't want to give it up even if I couldn't quite do it right.

I had decided when I took over the WA position to make peace with the UN and extract fiery vengeance later.  This was based solely on role-playing reasons - what is it they say?  "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."  I also thought about quipping "That's a nice empire you have there.  A shame something bad happened to it."  It seemed like a good idea in my head - but I had forgotten you were new to the game and didn't know what a late game wizard position can do.  It is extremely daunting to have your PCs start being nuked and not really having any defense - I experienced it in Game 176.  I admit that I hoped to demoralize you some - setbacks on the battlefield are part of diplomacy - but not to the point where you'd quit the game.

Ultimately you will make the decision that is best for you, and that's a good thing.  Alamaze is a lot of fun when things are going well, but can really suck when they aren't.  Each person has their own amount of suck that they can tolerate and still have fun - and having fun is the only reason to play.  I hope the level of suck ends up being low enough that you stay with Alamaze because I want you to have fun.  But I will also still respect you if you decide otherwise.

In terms of this game, I will stop nuking you.  I don't have the mental capacity right now to negotiate it or do it in character, so I'm just calling it off.

Seems we have a big pow wow at a certain town. Honestly I came here because it sounded like you were going to play in Runimeed. But here we are. I am ok to take this town and keep the city and move out of the region if the RD is agreeable. I will not be doing anything to your groups and I expect the same. But will leave it to the RD if he wishes to fight this battle or not.

RD
If you willing to give the town our groups our at to me and let me keep the city I will move out of region. But if you prefer to fight I can wipe out the group at the town and continue my nuking of the region.

Thank you, we do. My end, honor I will, against you, no agents will act.

UN-BL

Nope. To us, only helpful, DW has been. Helpful, you started, but unflexible, you ended. And lately, big jerk, you have been. Fight you to end, on principal, rather we would.

UN-EL/WI

To EL, trade towns, in Torvale, ready we are. Your help, love we would. Town in Oakendell, BL has taken, please take back. Villages in Oakendell, Northern Mists, he takes now, please take back. Gold, we care little, but denying BL, we care much.

OCC to Ataun

Maybe I was frustrated but I'm not the only one to think some of the regulars make deals with each other and "like to keep their options open" against some of the less experienced players. I think 3 of us said that in this game already. True or not that's what it seems like sometimes. And yes HH has been very helpful and even more than that polite and NICE but not everyone has been. Some have been a real turnoff. I'd give you three guesses but that's probably one or two more than you need.

Lords,

Again, I make zero claim to the pop center or any pop center in the Southern Sands. I was sheerly passing through. I will not interact with the pop center or either of your groups, and trust you will reciprocate on my groups.

Tremendous Majesty, for whatever it's worth, my suggestion would be to take the Witchlord's deal.

Best,

EL - UN

Oakendell belongs to Elves, with some permissions granted to UN. None other belongs or shall stay.

OOC: Not sure if this should go here or in General Discussion, but over the years, I think we've heard variations of this comment enough that it probably isn't completely baseless.

I really don't believe any regular here would do this consciously or deliberately, but I think it probably is easier to fall into what's comfortable and known, than what's unknown.

Honestly, I think part of it is frequency of communication. I'd take a brand new player who is receptive to feedback and replies every day (or even multiple times a day) over a regular who is in the middle of a busy phase (not a critique... we all have them, including me).

OOC:  2 things

As for old boys network, there are some folks who find they work well together, but that pattern is breakable. For instance, JF and I have been in maybe 15 or more games together. Without fear of correction, I can tell you this is the first time he and I have ever worked together. In fact, this is likely the first game we have not been mortal enemies in the game. And I have been in numerous games with HH and we have been allies only once prior to this game. And in that game we were GN and UN, so it made total sense.

As for silence of folks. Read the chatter at the end of Game 195 (the first public diplomacy game). This is a cool concept, but it does make diplomacy and invasions difficult. For instance, earlier this game, Torvale looked open and I was positioned to move to every pop center. Then my northern ally, the DW, shouted out across the Forum: Hey Elf, you should go take care of Torvale. Ok, good observation and great advice, but led to a whole discussion that killed the invasion. I ended up working something out with the DE and the UN, but still hard to do anything secret. So, when the UN calls for help, you have to trust that help will or will not come. A response on the Forum is not always the best way to help someone.

No problem. I blame the format, not the player Smile.

Dark Princes,

I see you have picked up one of our Agent teams during a routine security sweep. We would love to receive them back this month, if at all possible.

Additionally, do you still own a village in Synisvania? If so, I would be interested in trading for it, I have a village in Eastern Steppes you might want.

I would also be open to an extension of our non-aggression pact, if you desire.

Please let me know, thanks!

Best,
Grundun

Indeed, they were involved in shenanigans my security forces didn't appreciate. I bet we could work something out to get them back to you.

Let's extend our NAP to turn 30 and I'm open to trading villages. We can use the town where your team got caught up as a reference point?
