This one ended recently and it's the first Steel game to finish since the summer updates.  As we can see, only seven of the starting 12 were around for the finish.  I congratulate not just the others that made the podium, but also DuPont with the Free Traders and Volley Ball Michael with the Giants for hanging in there for the whole game despite the long odds they faced.  It's so easy to drop a game when the chips are down but hanging in there when things seem hopeless is the sign of a quality player in my opinion.

This may be the only game where I even made the podium since the championship of 2020.  There is nothing like winning the big one to make you a target for the whole world and that is the way it has seemed for the past 2 years.  That was a different time, B.G. - before Garth, 2nd runner up ...yada yada.   Wink

This game saw numerous players with several regions controlled fairly early.  Worth mention are the Giants, who took out big Red.  At some point Brek dropped and my DE picked up Sword Coast easily.  Vball with the Giants had 3 regions and was working on his 4th and 5th so I went after Mythgar to prevent an early win.  I didn't have the resources yet to go any further and told the world I was stopping at 3 regions, hoping not to become a target of multiple players.  I was true to my word and just went into build mode developing the position.

After many turns I was ready to try to make a move at about turn 32.  I was planning on taking Untamed and Stormgate on the same turn for the win and it looked good.  Unfortunately for me, Uncle with his NE had been watching closely and showed up at Stormgate the turn after I took it with a very strong NE group.  His other 3 groups went to Untamed and blocked me from getting that region.  The Legendary Castle at Stormgate was no match for him.

Several turns passed with NE trying to stall me first in Untamed, then in Mythgar.  GI was also putting up a good fight.  At one point I decided to intercept one of his pesky Giant groups.  He had 3 elite Giants and a Cyclops with a 4 wizard and 3 warlords.  I had a group with 7 weak units but a 9 and 5 wiz.  I threw a summon death knowing it would kill 2-4 of his 4 and thinking I could kill any survivors.  Well it only killed 2.  My p5 wiz tried to kill his p4 and failed.  Of my 7 troops only the iron golem survived.  Man those Giants are tough and they even had low morale.  His stomp tactic caused chaos and I took about 65% losses.  Big ouch!

I used the potent political game of DE to good effect and between that and decent military groups and agents I was able to clear Mythgar and go after Pelinor.  Untamed was also close to control.  Fortunately for me NE was also fighting the Death Knights and every couple of turns his military would have to port back to Triumvia and fight a round there.  It looked like I could win a 40 turn game by lion's share but on turn 38 I finally had all the pieces in place for a 5 region victory.  I had sent my 1st group back to Stormgate and could take out the legendary castle NE had there if necessary.  NE was guarding it with his first group though so we had a big fight.  H had tons of elite troops and all warlords plus a p7,9,10 with a ring and good weapons.  I had more troops and an iron golem and mummy plus decent wizards.  He won the fight with about 25% losses while I lost about 35%.

The political game had worked out and I had 5 regions for the win on turn 39.  EL showed up as well as DK but they were a turn too late.  AL actually was about 2000 points ahead so if it went to 40 turns he had a good chance of winning by lions share.  I did have plenty of resources for a huge point build so maybe so maybe a win that way?  We will never know.

DE was fun to play and the immortal trait is awesome.  Combine it with the best political game, the evil trait, and fine companions, and it is a solid choice if you have a little time to develop it.

Lets hear from some of the other players please.

Wow man, you cant even do a write up without bashing people. I dropped because of cheating and working together. that damn simple... No worries I'll be finishing my other games and wont be back. I wouldn't want to pollute the game with a non quality player style of play.  Angry That and as posted in another thread, am personally responsible for the many players who have quit, so maybe now they will return.

This was not meant as an insult to anyone PT and you know me bet than that.  It was about praise for hanging in there.  I have done both myself.  Please don't quit on my account.

If it wasn’t ment, then why post it?

As this was the first game with the 'new' kingdoms, I wanted to try one out and selected the Free Traders. But I took a calculated gamble which blew up in my face - I believe I had the first or second pick and went with them thinking I'd likely be able to base in Krynn but I was limited at the end to Zanthia or Mythgar. And the FT really needs some coastline to, well, trade. I did start off with a village on the coast of the Sorrows and a town on the coast of the Tempest, but neither player were interested in letting me hold them - the whole 'tight control' thing has made people fanatical about ethnically cleansing their regions. I built up a fleet in the Tempest anyway, hoping to snag a water based pop center that I could later defend. I also drew a bad card when my starting capital was too far away from Stormgate to move there on turn 1.
The first few turns were pretty ordinary as I got my region and snooped around the Tempest for a water base. I found one as there were two towns and three villages (one town being the NE capital, which wasn't well defended) but as I was preparing a strike, the filthy Deathknights moved in from the west and killing everybody with their filthy plague. I didn't see the point of trying to fight them - the FT is not known for it's mighty armies, so I tried to move to the Tempest. Unfortunately, the NE had developed Doming wizards faster than I expected and I only had a single dispel. Things went downhill pretty fast after that - I eventually took the Stormgate village to enable me to build in the Waves of Azure and then moved to a village there (which also had frontage on the Tempest) I was perused, though, and found final refuged in a village on the Nyvaria side of the Waves of Azure. The Elf was kind enough to leave me alone, there, and I spent the rest of the game scrounging villages and keeping my fleets busy while trading.
And then a bit of a sore spot - something went wrong in the code and my fleets decided to start attacking everybody. I reported this and nothing was done - in fact, I was told nothing was wrong. Well, something was but given that the whole game was a wash at that point, I didn't care much. But having rouge fleets attack meant while I was usually getting the better of it, I was still losing ships which cost gold to replace. I'd hoped to build up some wizards a bit but I couldn't.
Overall, I really do enjoy the FT and look forward to playing them a lot. I took them in a second game but I've dropped that one early due to a combo of a double team and I'm totally sick of the Deathknights - I've addressed that elsewhere but I'm simply not going to stay in any games where I have to deal with that.

It was a test game (in my opinion) that some people really wanted to win badly, even cheat if necessary. I'm also no longer playing, it's not because of PTRiley. I tested the new changes and decided much work is still needed.

Wookie,

I think you mean B.L.G. -- Before LORD Garth. And its 1st Runner up. Not 2nd. I mean, C'mon. Who really cares who the 2nd up runner is?
