Pairing Kingdoms and Regions
#1
What insight have you gleaned that you wish to share on pairing kingdoms and regions?  Surely some combinations make more sense than others.

For starters, The Gray Mouser tells me a few things:
  • Don't place a dragon kingdom in a region with more than a few sea areas.  These cannot be defended.
  • If your kingdom has strong available companions, choose a region like Krynn, Mythgar or The Untamed Lands that give you bonus brigades of the strongest available.
  • Consider your terrain adeptness when choosing a region.  This seems obvious but is not always followed in drafts thus far.
  • If you take a sea power like Atlantians or Pirates, ideally have a plan to three seas, or at minimum two, to eventually max at maybe 36 fleets producing 54,000 gold for you independent of PC's.
  • Political powers should consider the Capital regions of Darkover, Triumvia, and Nyravia, maximizing your noble power.
  • Imagine your plan at step two at least (after gaining your capital region) considering your kingdom and region.
Region or kingdom in round 1?  Generally, it would seem region, unless you are set upon a particular kingdom or two, which might go anywhere.  For example, the Ancient Ones, Demon Princes, Underworld and possibly a few others might go anywhere well, so can be picked first.    Some regions are well suited to multiple kingdoms, so selecting the region you like first is preferred based on your intended style of play, then fit one of maybe five different kingdoms available in round two to your kingdom.

For example, and we might have a thread on each region, in Krynn, the bonuses are fleets in two seas, lots of plains, two additional brigades of the strongest available companions, and others, as well as the somewhat preferred Westmen recruits available.  This region is suited to among others, Amazons, Rangers, Nomads, Warlock, Red Dragon, Black Dragon.   Wait, Krynn has two seas bordering!  Yes but only five actual sea areas.  Not many mountains to recruit Wyvern.  But some, and you don't need to control a PC to recruit Wyverns, and Zanthia is so near.

The Untamed Lands looks ideal for Red Dragons and others.  Nyvaria seems to work for Atlantians.  Elves and Dark Elves can manage Triumvia or Darkover.

Another thought is in-draft strategy.  So when your turn comes for round 2, consider what you already know about your neighbors.

Surprisingly to me, the Necromancer which is my favorite kingdom, was only chosen twice (and I played one of them). I really thought they would dominate in Maelstrom but what do I know Smile

No matter how different, from Halfling to Dark Elf to Red Dragon to Warlock, all can win.

The last column is the number of times that the "most favorable region" was chosen by the kingdom. So the Red Dragon chose Zanthia 5 times (out of 10 games).

Ack!!

So we need the cube spreadsheet that was coming on about when I was out of there in corporate finance.

OK, so some kingdoms still need champions.  Take up the mantle!  If you dare.

In the Fall, we will want to see Champions of Kingdoms for the determination of who is invited to the 2019 Champion of Alamaze.

To me, Maelstrom is the most difficult test.  So get yourself to top position in a kingdom.  Total points in Valhalla for a kingdom claims rights for Maelstrom for the kingdom when the time comes.

Might be a first kingdom pick last region pick senecio?

The interesting thing is, if regions are chosen first, it usual falls in line on kingdom choice being advantageous to the region of choice. Now I and others have experimented and chosen bone head kingdoms that didn’t even have the terrain to recruit. Smile But I was just experiementing.

I was able to podium with the RA in Darkover. It has a variety of terrain types that are favorable to the RA.
