Game 5100 ends
#1
Congrats to IT for a very hard fought victory.  This was my first 40 turn game and it featured some incredible battles, joyful victories and agonizing defeats.   Off to work but more to come later.

This was my last game without the map, and you can see how it really makes a difference.

As the RD had some fights with the DA and the WA, along with the TY early on.  Damn, those dragons eat a lot..

We'll look forward to more reports on this epic game.

On a related note, I'm considering a change where once a game gets past T24 it no longer counts as a game slot against the service level.  The idea is this would allow players to continue in a game they don't expect to win, but also can join a new game forming with a newly available slot.

That would be awesome

That would be great, its something I have been wanting.

Would love that change. I stuck it out knowing I had no chance for the last 15 - 20 turns just because I think it’s important to the game’s integrity.
As I was fighting the #1 and #2 kingdoms (and the RD) I know dropping would have seriously affected the game.

As somebody who never quits, this would be great! I'll type up my report in a bit.

I played the DarkElves in this one. I didn’t take notes but here is my recollection of events.

Right off the bat I saw R10 was open so I sent some Emmies there to try and claim the city. Next turn I see the TY had also sent folks there so I decide to pull out and focus on R9. Right about this time I also happen to stumble across the TY capital in R9 and I think I see a few of his groups. Being a silent game… I can’t obviously talk and this really impacts how I play. I make 2 big decisions. The first, in order to insure I get R9 fast (remember I don’t know the TY intentions) I take the SO village. If this were a diplomacy game I would have traded for it or given it back but it’s not…

Anyhow, that does help me lock up the region so I decide I have to remove the TY from R9. I am able to take his capital and push him to R10. Since we can’t talk, he’s figuring that I am coming to R10 after him.. so we initiate a pretty epic brawl. DA troops with wizards are just really nice and enable me to eventually claim R10… which is when I discover that the RD is also pushing into R10.

Of course, the IL decides that it is time for him to exact revenge and move into R9… and I find myself engaged with 3 foes. That would continue for a bit.. until I finally take time to hit the last few TY PCs and eliminate him. The RD and IL do a pretty good job of pummeling me but I am able to use my wizards pretty effectively to keep control of the city despite some epic battles. I try to take the battle to their regions to hopefully have them pull back a bit but it’s a hard task with 2 powerful kingdoms (allied) hitting you. I pop to some of their cities and harass, and eventually I get a premonition that I should get back to my capital so I port there. I face the whole IL military arrayed before me:

A 21 Brigade Army Group, a 12 brigade ArmyGroup, a 5 Brigade division and a patrol. Along with 9 P6s and 2 P5s… OUCH! Against that I have one 18 Brigade force with a P7, P6 and P4.

Somehow.. believe it or not… despite getting utterly pummeled with Summon Deaths and every other possible spell.. I manage to escape with 2 brigades AND keep the city! I also notice that the WA was hitting the IL from the north so I send him an Alliance on a flyer. It ended up just hurting me as he never returned it and attempted to move into my PCs and kill my troops shortly thereafter... so it was quickly back to fighting 3 powerful kingdoms. I was down to 3 PCs at one time, but I guess the bright side was that since I only had 2 brigades of troops I didn’t have much in the way of food or gold requirements. I was able to stymie and frustrate most of the attackers by guessing correctly on the number and placement of Domes. Finally the RD decides to just siege the city.. and that is how it eventually falls. I think my town at XQ was domed around 12-15 times in total before finally falling a turn or two before the end (but I took it back on turn 40 ! ). I was able to claw back my region by using my wizards to keep my patrols invisible and then cast Instant Summon Phantoms and taking the villages.

So anyhow… those are the highlights that I recall. It was a fun game and being silent absolutely changed the way it went down. I think I will always remember my epic defense against the IL and fondly remember the “resistance” movement in R10 until the game ended.

So I played the Pirates in this one. I started with my capital in the Sea of Foreboding, so I decided I had to base myself mostly in Amberland. I left my groups on my town in the Sea of Mystery (to keep the DU from swiping it) and the village in the Sea of Terror (same for the NE). That still gave me two patrols and the 1PI to explore Amberland. There was no SA or BL active, so the region was wide open. I took Avalon turn 2 and Evanon turn 4 (which gave me control). I also found a TY town and village in the area - I decided to eradicate him - I didn't want him to have a base to bother me and figured he'd be tied up elsewhere. I spent the next dozen turns or so building up my forces and fleets - other than the TY coming back and retaking his town and village, I had peace. I decided not to bother with the TY since he didn't seem to want to do much but take back what had been his and I had my eye on the SO. I know all to well, the longer you leave a magic kingdom alone, the more it will bite you.
On turn 17, I invaded Torvale with emmies and sea patrol (which clobbered both the EL and SO fleets). I also got lucky and found the SO capital that turn - AND it was in the Sea of Mystery! My luck didn't last, though. The SO fought back well and a turn later the EL invaded Amberland. I had thought him tied up in a fight with the NE, so this was a rude shock to say the least. I had to choose between moving back to 5 to defend or sticking it out in 4 with the dogfight with the SO. I chose the latter and after some back and forth, gained the region on turn 22. I took the SO capital on turn 25. Sometime during this, the WA took advantage of me being tied up and swiped my village in the Sea of Drowning (which they did NOT need!) so I punished them with a sea patrol that sunk most of their feet in the area (also the IL, which was just bad luck - they had also fallen prey to one of my sea patrols in the Sea of Foreboding - eventually we declared each other allies to avoid that).
My battle with the SO was largely pyrrhic - by turn 26, he regained Torvale and my diplomatic corps had been devastated. I fell back on Amberland and started to work on gaining that back from the EL. With my limited number of emmies and groups, it took me a while to chip away at in, but on Turn 35, I managed it. Having rebuilt my diplomatic corps somewhat, I quickly swung back against Torvale and gained it on turn 39. My last turn was just defending what I had and taking a few parting shots at my enemies - I sank the EL fleet in the Sea of Mystery (again) and unloaded a major skeleton on the SO (kicking him off the HC). I had hoped I would gain just enough points to land at third, but the WA - on the strength of a stronger performance ealier in the game - edged me out. It was a fantastically fun game - congrats to IT (and sorry about your sunken fleets!). In hindsight, perhaps after retaking Amberland, I should have kept going after the EL but I was just better set up to go back into Torvale. Great game all!
