Construction Strategy
#1
What is your view on developing PC's through the multiple buildings and fortifications from a strategic persepctive?

What are the essentials, the best bargains, the have-to-haves to win, the nice to have builds?

How do you know when you can afford to build instead of spending resources elsewhere?

Add anything else you think worthy, including an over-arching strategy for construction for a kingdom.

How different is it based on what kingdom and what region you have (but we will have a thread on kingdoms and regions).

I noticed many buildings are pointless to build during the wrong season. Mainly during winter. Granary and port should be built during the months of the highest  resource  production.

Has anyone actually built a Great Mages Tower? It seem to me the benefits you get are not worth the cost, since it is only useful if

a) Somebody attacks the PC it is in

and

b) You happen to have a group there to defend it.

I think it should have some extra ability, like increasing the research discount to 15-20%, or giving you a better chance to exceed your level maximum.

Yes I did build one with the IL, but Ace never found my hidden capital that game. I thought about announcing  where it was so I could test the tower.  As far as I know it has never been tested. The test game ended very early.

How about discussing the ones that are built?

When do you build castles, forges, forums, bazaars, thieves guilds, wizard towers, temples, watch towers, great castles?

Personally, I love the fortress/citadel as a first step defensively. Thieves guilds also make me happy. I've only ever built one watch tower and it seemed pretty useless since it's a recon that won't pick up concealed emissaries.

I like and build all buildings  except  for  watchtowers.  I only wish the granary and port increased from the normal base production  rather than adjusted by seasonal productions. I find often that by the time I can afford 5o build granary and port its during seasons that make it worthless  to build and have to wait 6 turns to build them. I think the port should not need any requirements. With a kingdom such as the Pirates, when you take the fleet quality  increase during customization.  I cannot add more fleets to my fleet, even at the lowest cost without a port. This is a huge disadvantage and loss of merchant income.

All fortifications have there use.

I think we should drop the bazaar requirement for the granary. The best place to build a granary is in a village, but it makes no sense at all to build a bazaar there.
