Is it me, or does Amberland seem like a much kinder, gentler place?

I was actually in the convention hall when that speech was given. At the time, I certainly didn't notice that particular line. I was squatting in the aisle by the Delaware delegation looking unsuccessfully for Governor DuPont.

I was 10 when that speech was given. I *was* following the campaign through the occasional Newsweek article, but I never heard the speech due to being in Guyana, so I only know the line from the reference in Neil Young's 'Keep on rocking in the Free World.' (plus archived footage of course.)

"We've got a thousand points of light,
for the homeless man.
We got a kinder, gentler,
machine gun hand."

The thing is, while's Bush's speech had some pretty words (thanks to Peggy Noonan), it generated nowhere near the emotion in the hall that Ronald Reagan's final address had done three nights before. I will never forget that as long as I live.
