Any way to settle the issue definitively?
Also the original article seems to say that self-invisible lets the wizard contribute just as much as the assist order which seems odd.
Self Invisible is intended for group vs. group battles. It is extraneous for an unusual sighting encounter. Guarded Attack currently is the only active spell for use in Unusual Sightings. The Wizard stays with the horses unless you issue Order #139 or Guarded Attack. I am contemplating adding Lightning Attack at a different value for unusual encounters when some spells are revised in the first expansion.

Guarded Attack does place the wizard in the patrol. I have tested this extensively in my two games.

BITD Self Invisible worked I believe- circa 1980's. - Not anymore.
Guarded attack works now as well as the order to assist with your wizard (in the orders) and I believe combat spells will work as I tried it but maybe that was the test game- I'm pretty sure though I cast Firestrike or something and it went off in the patrol.
Maybe it's changed. I'd go with what Rick says for obvious reasons-
I've had 'varied' outcomes in encounters and some failures with groups you'd assume would defeat the guardian easily-

So I'm hoping to get some guidance here...I've gotten the name/id#, and location of a certain artifact (through divinations), and I did the 140 order and it said I needed a key to get into this "encounter" though I noticed the printout did not seem to give me an id# for the key, just the name of the key. So the obvious question - how do I find the key??
Thanks!

ironic (and true) question: I found a key. Do I have to hope I stumble on the right door?

It's like a Quest. You need to search out the Key before you can start access the artifact. The simplest way is to go crazy with the HP divinations and hope to get lucky. I have had some success here, but I have also lost something like 12 HPs in one game!

Can anyone confirm if a key is considered the type of artifact that you are searching for?
Such as "weapon" for the sword key.

The Keys are all King artifacts.
Fair Warning: the portals are all considered King artifacts too and there are at least six of them!
