New Steel - Exploratory
#21
I have never felt unduly teamed up on by daredevil. I think take the UN that you already claimed. The haters will blame no matter what you take or when you take them anyway. May as well play the kingdom your interested in.

We have three new players who have established accounts in the last couple days, but none have yet signed up for a kingdom here.

How can I improve the communication for new players on how to get going? Everyone pays their PayPal invoice, but they don't sign up for a kingdom.
Presently they get an email like this:

Greetings (X),

And welcome to Alamaze! We see you have signed up at Scout Level Service, allowing you to be in one game of Alamaze at a time. You’ll get an invoice for your first month via PayPal today. While you will be invoiced now, your first renewal will be 30 days after your first game starts.

Please register for the forum (http://kingdomsofarcania.net/forum/index.php) and post your kingdom selection for the game forming, which currently is the thread for New Steel Exploratory under Active Games (http://kingdomsofarcania.net/forum/showt...p?tid=9082). You should select your kingdom on that thread today from those not already selected. You should also consider posting under The Players to introduce yourself to the community. You’ll find the forum community is very helpful in answering questions. If you get stuck on anything technical-wise, contact us at support@alamaze.co. Your turns will be submitted to activegames@alamaze.co.

Again, welcome, and have a great time enjoying Alamaze!

First, I am considering joining this game myself, just figuring out the position to claim.

In answer to Ry Vor's post above: There is a lot of information spread out over the forum and it takes some investigation to put things together at the beginning. I have found that being able to ask a lot of questions is really helpful and many players have been very generous with their time. None more than Jumpingfist who gets no fewer than 3-5 emails from me every day asking questions and advice. He (and others) help with everything from rule minutia to larger strategy questions. To that end I wonder what it would like if every new player was assigned a mentor to specifically guide them through the early days. Just a thought...

If new players aren't getting that they need to 1) register at the forum and 2) post in a thread to claim their kingdom maybe an alternative would be asking them to submit a list of the kingdom preferences to support and just assigning them one from their list. Maybe new players aren't getting how integral the forum is to the actual game play, IDK...
-This Khal Drogo, it's said he has a hundred thousand men in his horde

Yes, Drogo. I think you hit on it - the forum is like the bloodstream of Alamaze, it's not an "extra". It is pretty much a part of playing Alamaze to at least be current on the forum and of course we would always like more of our personas to be active posters.

Well, now four new players who have signed up for an account in the past few days, and still none that have claimed a kingdom here. And I thought I was reasonably competent with the English language.

Maybe create a new players read this first type of main thread. Put a kind of checklist of things to do. I know your email does that but also gives them a obvious by title first place to go. But in there thread only the most important items needed to get going on there first game. Then they can read through the rest of the forum.
Critical items I think are. How to download rules and commands, How to join a game, kingdom discriptions (even though in the rules), Current map. Sample turn.
This is all in the forums but for a new guy kind of overwhelming.

Is this the place to sign up for a kingdom in the next game? If so, is the WL still open? I will likely need to be walked through this all a bit since I am over 50 and only mediocre at forum maneveuring. Actually came across this thread by being willing to wade through the prodigious info on the site. Word of advice from a NooB is to consider taking Jumping Fists advice on a "easy button". Still, it actually helped that Rick sent me a personalized email kind of pointing out that I should pick a kingdom. I assumed that meant I should look for the next game (although I only just payed today and have not yet received any login info beyond the forums).

What does Steel mean? Perhaps this means no magic kingdoms? If so, then Witch Lord is probably not available or stupid. Is there a lexicon of Lingo for NooBs?

Welcome aboard. The WI is still available and yours. Sounds like you do need some help to get going. Message me or post your email I can get you going. Best to find someone out side the game though to help with exact turn details as I am your neighbor in the game. No worries though just letting you know Smile

Oh forgot Steel just means a single player game of 12 or 15 kingdoms. Vs being a team game or game where one player owns multiple kingdoms.
