The mountains in the middle of Oakendale make the region more attractive to dragons and giants as well.

The TR and GI both are a big issue for the EL. Amberland often also gets tilted somewhat NW. I recently had a setup where I could get all my giant brigades on Lorethane by turn two. I could only get three brigades on either city in Amberland. So it made it easier for me to take Oakendale than Amberland. I do not think the elf is set up all that badly just need to be aware who is around and what could happen. Maybe not be against sharing a region for some protection.

Also, Viperhead on the safe side of the sea of Terror takes it off the map. I still think the EL is fine as it is, though.

While we usually feel like a hamster on its wheel, we can see that the changes made over the years to the Elves and in Resurgent Viperhead being on Perdition Isle instead of south, has led to a lot more incursions by the Giant and / or Troll into Oakendell. We also see more Troll invasions of Runnimede.
Generally, in any game, early diplomacy matters. I have also been advising brand new players to take the Elves or Dwarves, which skews the kingdom a bit. I would say at this point, neither is as comfortable as in days past.
Changes are coming to virtually all setups.

Its a great kingdom, solid over all, but it has a tendency to get overrun more often than not. Why is it the Troll would rather head North than stay in his starting region? I almost every game I have been in since I came back, the Troll or Giant invades Oakendell. I'd hate to break the game so that it never gets invaded, but some tweaks might be nice.

I think the Elf could use a little more boost in his starting military. A couple more Elven brigades could make Oakendale defensible early on. Veterans just don't rock in the forest.

Maybe they could get enhanced retreat abilities in the forest.

Something similar to the DW. One would be hiding in the trees and setting traps

Perhaps it's my inexperience, but my run at the elf position in an exploratory anonymous format has been frustrating...
I started with no HP, of course, no agents with enough rank to search for PCs, only P1 wizards, and knowing either the TR or GI was likely coming for me. Even though I combined all my troops ASAP, they still weren't militarily enough to take the city. I raised a wizard to power 2 to increase the effectiveness of diplomacy, increased my regional reaction to friendly, increased morale in my group w all my troops, and STILL couldn't diplomacy the city before the troll arrived (turn 3) with his hordes and unlimited reinforcements he could call from my home forest. How am I supposed to fight that battle?
Why don't elves start friendly in their native region? Or, barring that, have a larger world/political influence reflecting their heritage?
How is the forest in any way a preferred terrain for the elf? Movement is abysmal; it's hurtful to my best military phase, archery, even after my 'bonus'; others can recruit troops at will every turn, but I cannot. I would have thought any fighting in the elven forest would give the advantage to the elf.
Also, for a magical race, starting with only power 1 wizards seems...weak. Maybe they usually start with a HP to balance things a little better, but overall, the stats I saw don't seem to reflect the elves as an ancient, magical race with legendary forest prowess.
I don't think I'd play this kingdom again on this map without changes. It just seems like an imbalanced problematic start that can not be addressed by competent gameplay and strategy, only email machinations and NAPs.

Well, some of that is incorrect. For example, no kingdom is stronger in the forest than the Elves. But as I have said here, there, and everywhere, many kingdom setup changes were made in North Carolina that don't make sense to me. We will constantly be changing setups.
When the admin for Alamaze went to NC, the Elves and Dwarves almost always placed, or were at least favorites to do so. So many modifications were made against them and for kingdoms like the Giants, that sometimes I don't recognize the game.
Still, if you check out Valhalla vs. whatever is posted by MEPBM (taken directly and indisputably from Alamaze, when they didn't secure a legal license) or HW, I think we have all our 15 kingdoms much more viable than any alternative game mimicking Alamaze.
