Unusual Sightings
#11
Any offensive battle spell without a target group in the order entry will put the wizard into the party and contribute that battle spell to the strength of the party against the unusual sighting guardian.
Typically Guarded Attack spells are used to offer the kingdom some protection against wizard loss.

Then what is the point of Order #139? Just for 'Presence'? I know that the wizard isn't able to cast another spell afterward. In #99 I tried Teleporting, but it failed because he had already taken an action.

I had thought just to utilize an Adept / low wizard to help with the sighting. I'll double check the formulas to validate the offensive spells = battle value, but I'm pretty sure any offensive battle spell will put the wiz against the sighting. I'll update after checking the bits.

So an adept can actually contribute to the sighting investigation? I had thought they were pretty much useless. How does he/she assist?

Very interested in this answer. If any offensive spell will do it, then would a p2 be better off with a firestrike than a 139? I previously thought only 101 or 139 would get the wizard into the encounter.

Me too- I wonder how wizards are weighted in them as well but knowing Guarded Attack works is helpful.

As the Witchlord I lost a Marshall in a sighting. I'd be devastated if I lost a wizard. I'll use Guarded Attack whenever I can!

Just read an old turn report where an investigation party had to fight a magical tornado. It made me think that maybe firestrike in an unusual sightings encounter might not be effective all the time.

The assist in sightings command from what I can tell has the Wizard use his most effective spell for the encounter anyway.

Any guidance from above on how this works exactly would be appreciated.

Fog of war elements. If you "assist" with the best possible spell you could possibly lose the wizard. Some positions this could be crippling. Many artifacts aren't worth losing a good wizard over.

Leaders fight and "the men" fight as well-

Because a sighting is an unknown quantity (a lot of the time) you have to hope your party can handle it and wont get annihilated.

There's no exact science to getting through an encounter without losing stuff. If you put good leaders/wizards in harms way then your odds are high you beat the encounter but like Diamond said he lost his Marshal in our test game-

One strategy might be to send wizards alone, with Guarded Attack, to investigate sightings. You won't lose anything except momentum and promotion opportunities.

If you know what artifact you are hunting, you may be able to get a better idea of the risk involved. Elan is bound to be more difficult than the Wand of Lightning.
