Best ways to use battle spells?

This is the battle spells sister thread to the one I started about using wizard spells to develop your empire.

Some things to consider... What spells are best for wizards at lower levels, mid levels and high levels? Defensive vs attacking spells? Best spells for different terrains? Against cavalry/archers etc.

Best defensive spell overall is definitely Wall of Flame. You get it relatively early (level 3) and it's a killer against all but Dragons.

Situational. Wall is a good one but stuff like Tornado might be more useful. There's also the possibility of your better wizards getting killed unless they do the Guarded Attack or something. If you have BIG groups the stuff that increases combat value might be better than Firestrike or something.

All the possibilities is what makes the game so intriguing
