Longer Game Potential?
#1
The big divide in PBEM is close ended (like Alamaze) vs. open ended (like, ah, Legends?) styles.

What would you think about an Alamaze variant where you start with much fewer resources (characters especially), as would everyone else, and you gain characters as you accomplish certain things - taking a town, a city, getting to a mountain range, etc.

So it would be like Alamaze, same rules, start as maybe a Baron, but grow to kingdom and maybe empire, and a game is maybe 60-70 turns instead of the current average of maybe 32.

Or does that get too far afield?

I think could work maybe the first 12 turns run every other day then switch to a standard schedual. I know being one of the kinda helper kingdoms at the end of the 40 turn game it really did feel like it was dragging on a bit. The end so far out may cause people to drop sooner with an end so far out.

When can i sign up?  The only issue I could see is some kingdoms might be much stronger due to specials vs some of the bland kingdoms.

I don't think I would enjoy that as much, but I'd be open to try it. I think drops would be a big problem, though.

I find the games where you get up to power more quickly as more fun.  I like Primeval because there are more resources and therefore more interesting orders.  I have no problem with playing in a longer game but I don't find the aspect of starting out limited as being appealing.  I wish we could enter 30+ orders per turn.

We could try a 60 turn game that would end on points only.  That would certainly alter behavior and strategy.  Probably would be very agent heavy.
