Leveling up wizards over max assured

Does anyone know about leveling up above your kingdom's maximum assured level? Life, if it is 6 and you go for power 7, I believe that you have roughly a 50% shot.

After that, is it still 50%? Or is it 25% (half of a half)?

I think it keeps getting harder by half. 50, 25, 12.5.  Made one power 8 with the HA once, wasn't cheap.

I'm pretty sure it stays at 50% :
(Spellcasters may attempt to research beyond the assured level, but may fail about 50% of the time, and the gold cost is still consumed)

I know that when I fail, and especially when I fail several times, it seems a whole lot worse than 50%
